Publisher's Synopsis
An up-to-date account of the development of the North Sea Rift system and its associated sedimentary basins is given in this volume, which presents contributions by leading research workers. Discrepancies in the existing methods for estimating crustal stretching are addressed and solutions are put forward with new models of basin development. The tectonic and paleogeographical development of the North Sea Rift system is reviewed, and accounts are given of its crustal structure, using evidence from deep seismic profiling. The proposed crustal models combine gravity and seismic data, rift-related magmatism, linked fault structures, and architectural styles. A comprehensive gravity map and a review of the hydrocarbon potential of the North Sea basin are also included.
