Publisher's Synopsis

The world in the 21st century is likely to be very different from the 20th century world. Many have used the word globalisation to describe the way in which new communication and information technologies have turned the world into a village, where learners in rural South Africa are easily able to access the culture of learners in urban New York. These new technologies also make huge amounts of information available to learners, thus potentially undermining the information role teachers used to play. This module examines these changes and provides teachers with the conceptual tools necessary for them to understand and intervene in these changes. The module will explain the changing nature of schools and education and the changing roles that schools and teachers are likely to play in developing societies in the new millenium. Key questions addressed include: Are formal schools and teachers relics of the 20th Century?; are computers better teachers than our often under-trained and over-stressed classroom teachers?; does the internet provide a much richer and more flexible learning space than poorly maintained brick and mortar classrooms?
