Publisher's Synopsis
The edited and mediated readings (extracts from the work of prominent theorists) supplement the issues and concepts developed in the learning guide. Section 1 includes readings that provides a broad, commonsense introduction to the issues tackled in the module. It stresses links between the three areas of study (the economy and work, culture and identity, and information technology), and between all of these and schooling within an increasingly globalized world. Section 2's readings explore changes in the economy. They examine the kinds of skills future workers will require to be successful, the ways in which people will work, and what this implies for the kinds of curriculum that schools should teach. Section 3 includes readings that acknowledge that our new world is a much more diverse and multi-cultural world. This challenges schools, that have traditionally focused on developing a single national identity (a patriotism), to teach values and cultural ideas that recognize different identities.;Section 4 includes readings that focus attention on the massive changes that new information and communication technologies have made possible. They look back at how these have changed the ways in which we work, communicate and understand ourselves in a smaller more globalised world. Section 5's readings place all the above issues to debate about the phenomenon of globalisation, particularly as it is differentially experienced by rich and poor, men and women, rural and urban, black and white (etc.) within dependent, developing countries.
