Publisher's Synopsis
Bill Lawrence is a Gloucester Bloke through and through. He grew up within a close-knit community, being raised by his grandparents after the death of his mother. His many hilarious and sometimes moving tales echo the joys and sorrows of everyday life in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s. He started work at the age of fourteen with limited options, with stints as a postman and an undertaker's apprentice, and recalls his time with a true appreciation of the experience - no matter how harrowing. After a few stumbling blocks and time spent working away, Bill married his beloved Sally and they start a family. But soon Bill receives his "call-up" papers, and the war takes him all the way to North Africa and Italy before he finally returns home - to Gloucester and Sally.
