Excerpt from Table of Elevations Within the Pacific Slope: Compiled for the Sierra Club
Early in 1892 Mr. Mark B. Kerr, then Treasurer of the Sierra Club, undertook the task of collecting data relating to the altitude of salient points in the mountain ranges of the Pacific Coast of North America. Mr. Kerr was called to South America for an indefinite time, and Mr. R. H. Chapman, of the United States Geological Survey, volunteered and was appointed to continue the work, which now includes Lower California, United States, British Columbia and Alaska.
