Publisher's Synopsis

INTRODUCTION

1.1 HISTORY OF REFRIGERATION

Around 2500 years B.C. Indians, Egyptians, and others were manufacturing ice by

keeping water in porous pots exposed to the cold air during the night. The evaporation

of water in cool dry air along with heat transfer through radiation in the clear night

resulted in ice formation although the ambient temperature was above freezing point.

Evidence is available which supports the use of ice in China 1000 years B.C

(Neuburger, 2003). The East Indians produced refrigeration by dissolving salt in

water in the 4th century A.D. In olden days evaporative cooling was also used (Anderson,

1953).
