Nigel tells his own unique story about growing up in a small coal mining village in South Wales in a 'no holds barred' approach. His teenage transition from civilian to military life is not without issues. However, his exploits and experiences are all valuable life lessons and he reflects hard on his learning from both positive and negative events. These reflections add authenticity to the story that is engaging for the reader whilst offering them the opportunity to reflect on their own thoughts and decisions when faced with a similar set of circumstances. Nigel is the first to admit that he doesn't always get things right, but he always does his best recognising that he is the sum of his own decisions. After all, as he suggests, he is just a 'Gifted Amateur.'
