Publisher's Synopsis
Recently, Taiwan began its regularly scheduled live-fire artillery drills, which came as China continued its ongoing military exercises near the island. The Tien Lei drill, a live ammunition artillery exercise, was announced in late July and was intended to simulate Taiwan's defense against an attack by the People's Liberation Army of China.
It was planned as a component of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang exercises, which are taking place this week on Tuesday and Thursday.
This occurs in the midst of heightened tensions and shortly after China announced it would extend extensive air and sea drills to Taiwan's north, south, and east that were scheduled to end on Sunday.
Taiwanese television reported that during the military drill in Pingtung County in the south of Taiwan, close to a zone previously designated by the Chinese army for its drill, flares were fired on Tuesday in coastal areas.
