He was born in 1883, in the province of Jamtland, Sweden. His father was a log-scaler and his mother a farmer's daughter. He lost his mother when he was nine years old and by the age of eleven, worked 10 hour days at the sawmill to help support his family. Throughout his life, John kept a journal, recording his many adventures and narrow escapes as well as events that he found significant or interesting. After emigrating to America and becoming fluent in English, he translated his writings to English in the hope that future generations would find them interesting.
