For the purpose of tracing the origin of the Latin Benediction and some of the other details which I have to consider, we must go back to the art of the early Christians in the catacombs at Rome, and study the sculptured sarcophagi which are preserved in the Lateran Christian Museum. They throw considerable light upon what is now always termed the atti tude of Benediction We shall find that it was not originally a blessing it was rather a gesture of address, which came in course of time to have a wider significance.
