Tumours of the female genital tract spread locally and distantly through the lymphatic system. This means that surgery can master lesions in relatively advanced stages - stages in which nongynaecologic tumours would already have spawned haematogenous metastases. Such knowledge must spur the specialist to continuously rethink the approaches to surgical treatment. This book addresses specifically the surgical aspects of gynaecologic oncology, including breast cancer. Surgical strategies are developed according to the histopathologic spread patterns of the different tumours. All modern diagnostic methods in oncology are presented. Special emphasis is placed on surgical indications, procedures, techniques and treatment results. The problems of recurrent disease, complications, follow-up, psychologic sequelae and legal issues in connection with surgery are also discussed.
