Before every Homily is placed the respective part of the Gospels, thus Showing the intimate relation existing between the one and the other. The literal, Spiritual, allegorical, and figurative meaning of the Holy Scriptures is explained in these discourses. Their style is clear and simple, yet elegant; the comparisons are most beautiful and instructive, for they are natural. Simplicity IS their ornament, and this Simplicity pervades the whole dis course. The present book is, therefore, a selection of different essays which, by their number and diversity, form a collection presenting the doctrine of faith and morals, and containing the principal truths of our Holy Catholic Religion.
This is the notion or idea which may be formed of these Homilies. I have endeavoured to render, in'a natural and simple style, the sublime and forcible eloquence of the holy Fathers, without weakening their thoughts. For I am of opinion that a literal translation.
