Mr. Astor's principal agent on this island was Ramsey Crooks, to whom, with others, he sold out in 1834; but the trade now lacked the energy and controlling in?uence which Mr. Astor had given it, and the Company soon became involved. In 1848; the business was closed, and the property sold. In its best days, the business was one of mammoth proportions; but it exists now only in history.
