Publisher's Synopsis

The present volume is the outcome of various research activities conducted over several years at the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought (ISITA, based at Northwestern University Evanston, IL) and the Institut Francais d'Archeologie Orientale (IFAO) in Cairo. Supported with a generous grant from the Ford Foundation, Rudiger Seesemann organised various events and workshops under the umbrella of ISITA, focusing on Sufi texts and contexts as well as the literary production in the Tijaniyya Sufi order. At the IFAO, a group of French and francophone researchers convened a series of conferences and meetings, resulting in three major publications that propose new readings of sources pertaining to the history of Sufism.
