The hearer listening as the speaker produces the speech continuum by his articulation could at any moment reproduce most of the words he had heard so far, although the sentence stimulates him as a unit. And yet the perception of the words is not the primary object of the process of listening; it is the meaning of the sentence which is to be received. This meaning is synthesized through whatever the words impart.
