Publisher's Synopsis

This work is a study of the syntactic constructions of extraposition and pronominal agreement in Semitic languages, examining not only their structure, but also their function.;The author uses a type of discourse analysis in an attempt to elucidate the grammatical structure of the Semitic languages and shows how syntactic constructions are used to mark boundaries in the semantic structure of texts. The languages examined include Arabic, Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Aramaic, Syriac, Akkadian and Amharic. The text is complemented with a section on comparative Semitic syntax and a bibliography.
