Publisher's Synopsis
Significant changes have occurred in the Brazilian economy over the last decade, the most recent widely reported being the fiscal crisis accompanying the sharp devaluation of the real in January 1999. However, many other large changes have occurred but, prior to presentation in this book, they have rarely been discussed in one volume. Attention is focused on four major issues: macroeconomic analysis; regional economic analysis; infrastructure issues; agriculture and trade. Contributions focus on macro policy analysis, including a careful evaluation of the æpharo realÆ, recent trends in spatial and personal income convergence, the role of external trade, development in the Northeast of Brazil, infrastructure problems and several chapters focusing on aspects of the agricultural sector. The contents of the volume clearly appeal to development economists, regional scientists, policy analysts and those scholars with an interest in access to a wide range of economic analysis of structural changes in the Brazilian economy at different spatial scales and with varying sectoral focus.
