This book is an in-depth analysis of the impact of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in India upon food security (hunger) both in the conventional sense and in terms of Sen?s ?entitlement and deprivation thesis?, with an attempted extension of the theory, and through hunger, on the environment. The focus is primarily on cuts in subsidy to food and to inputs agriculture, in government investments in agriculture, in credit for the farm sector, and on the increases in food procurement prices engineered by SAP as it affects food security. Inequity in access to land assets and its effects on hunger and increasing unemployment, in the context of the Structural Adjustment Programme, have been examined. Following this, the nexus between hunger and environment, and the issue of increased producer?s price margin and environmental measures in the context of agriculture, have been traced. To support conclusions, the experiences of other countries which have structural adjustment measures of the World Bank?IMF variety, with special regard to food security are cited.
