Publisher's Synopsis

New techniques in molecular biology have enabled the isolation of numerous peptides now recognized as playing key roles in the stress response. This two-volume work consists of contributions by prominent researchers in the field, representing a survey of stress research at the present time. Volume 1 focuses on the neuroendocrine mediation of stress. Following coverage of the anatomy of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, the participation of corticotropin-releasing factor and opioid peptides in the stress response is outlined. The next two articles discuss the effects of stress on cytokine production and the role of interleukins in the stress response. Further contributions consider stress and catecholamines, corticosteroid receptors and homeostasis, and finally, the neuroendocrine and pharmacological mechanisms of stress.
