Publisher's Synopsis
In the aftermath of the debt crisis, disappointment with the results of structural adjustment policies is leading to a reappraisal of theories of economic development in general and industrialization strategies in particular. The first part of this book contains an essay on Kurt Martin's pioneering theoretical work by E.V.K.Fitzgerald, and an extended essay by the editor on the foundation of modern development economics, including a vigorous defence of the "political economy tradition" against its liberal critics. The second part of this book contains twelve papers which demonstrate the continuing relevance of this tradition.
