Carl Strayhorn graduated from Duke University with an A.B. in Economics in 1959, with a Master of Hospital Administration in 1964, and with a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1966. A really solid education, but the author thinks he has gotten over it. He worked in hospital administration in the Wake County Hospital System and in Central Prison Hospital, Raleigh, North Carolina as well as in the City of Memphis, Tennessee Hospitals and in the Delaware Division of the Wilmington Medical Center. He also directed the Health Systems Agency of Western Maryland, Cumberland, Maryland, and worked in private businesses. He is a member of Grey Stone Church in Durham where he served as a deacon and as a finance and as a building and grounds committee member. He is a past president of the Durham Civitan Club and a member of the Durham Sports Club.
Beth, his wife of nearly fifty-one years and counting, graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education, and retired with thirty-two years as an elementary school teacher. Their two daughters reside in the Durham area.

Beth has been the most loving, steadfast wife and "partner" a husband could ever want, supportive on the roller-coaster, recipient of many, many compliments over the years from her students' parents about the effectiveness of her teaching talents and skills, reflective of her steadiness within the family.
