I have compiled these stories and incidents of the early history of the University of Michigan, because they should be preserved, and with the hope that valuable additions may, in the future be'added to the small number here presented. Not that they are important historical events, or present conditions that are worthy of Imitation; but they are facts connected with our immature early history, that may, in a measure, serve as mile stones, to mark and indicate the extent and rapidity of our progress. We sincerely hope and believe'that this narration will not at all, tend to revive these old and worn out customs. We are pleased to note that the University has Outgrown nearly everything of this nature, and let our motto ever be Nulla Vestz'gz'a Rélrorsum.
