Although not trusting the change of heart entirely, Steph falls under the spell of the reformed Nick. When news of Todd's serious injury reaches Steph, her happiness is shattered. While staying in Brisbane the news that Nick has become engaged to his former girlfriend devastates Steph. Reconciling with Steph leaves Nick confident that they had repaired the damage to their relationship. When he returns to Thornton Downs Nick receives a letter that throws his relationship and belief in Steph into doubt. While attempting to protect his property from the imminent danger, Nick pushes Steph away. With help from the daughter of her employers, Steph unearths the secret that Nick would not share. Angry at his lack of faith Steph accepts a job on another property. When Nick realises that Steph's intervention has helped to resolve the Thornton family's problem, Nick understands that he has made a huge mistake.
