Publisher's Synopsis
This is an index of the ELLUG edition of Stendhal's English-speaking journalism comprising seven volumes, published between 1980 and 1995. It is in two parts: an index of names of people, works and bibliographic entries; and a thematic index on the subjects covered by Stendhal.;Stendhal's English-speaking journalism was first mentioned by Romain Colomb, the author's executor. This initial reference was then followed up in 1909 by Doris Gunnell in a doctoral thesis. Gunnell, who provided a summary of the articles emphasized their interest and set out to demonstrate that they were in fact written by Stendhal. In 1935, Henri Martineau included the French versions of these texts in the "Complete Works of Stendhal", under the title "Courier Anglais". This edition has been both out of print and outdated for some considerable time.;The ELLUG edition comprises seven volumes and an index, published between 1980 and 1995.;The introduction to each volume provides useful information concerning London's journalistic milieu, and describes the methods used to explore it in this collection. The articles are presented chronologically.;The texts of Stendhal's original manuscripts (of which only a few are still in existence - about one-fifth of the entire corpus) are given whenever possible in order to facilitate comparisons. Where the original English text has been lost, the translation remains faithful to the English text and not to any hypothetical notions concerning Stendhal's approach or style of writing.;Articles are accompanied by extensive historical and literary notes, as well as explanations concerning the translation.
