Publisher's Synopsis
Composite steel-concrete structures are used widely in modern bridge and building construction. Over the years, a large number of bridges and overpasses have been built with pre-stressed concrete decks. At the same time, bridges with all steel decks have always been very well accepted as a solution, for railway decks and for very long suspension and cable-stayed decks. Over the past 50 years, the number of bridges built with composite steel-concrete decks, composed of a concrete slab interacting with a steel structure, has been gradually increasing in several countries. The very large amount of theoretical and experimental research, design application and construction work carried out has shown the efficiency and economy solution of composite structure. Steel plates have high tensile strength but are comparatively susceptible against buckling caused by compressive forces. However, when steel plates are combined with concrete, the resistance against buckling increases and heavy stiffeners are not necessary, which makes steel bridges economical and competitive against concrete bridges. This volume presents the current state of the art related to design and analysis in steel-concrete composite bridge structures. It is an essential guide to the latest methods in the design and construction of steel-concrete composite bridges. Containing precise information, in-depth cases and numerous designs, this work offers guidance from the first step in bridge design through to the construction process. This volume contains chapters that provide details of more steel-concrete composite bridges. It is intended to show how composite bridges may be designed simply from basic concepts without the need for a clause-by clause checking of codes and standards. The volume is intended for a number of readers, for those who are the Bridge Engineers and wish to find more detail on steel-concrete composite bridges as well as researchers and practitioners who require a deeper understanding of the methods used as well as how they are verified against design codes.
