Excerpt from Standing Information Regarding the Official Administration of the Madras Presidency: In Each Department, in Illustration of the Yearly Administration Reports Prepared Under the Orders of Government
Some of the notices in the following pages have been taken from that portion of the Madras Administration Reports for 1872-73 and 1875-76 which dealt with standing as Opposed to current information regarding the different departments. The greater number of the notices, however, and those which seemed the most important, have been written Specially for the present volume. The account of the method of official administration in the Native State of Travancore has been taken from a paper written by the late Dewan of Travancore; it is given here as throwing light on the British administration of the Western Coast, especially with regard to the land revenue question. This volume does not attempt in any sense to be a Gazetteer of the Presidency; the few remarks of that nature which will be found, have been introduced only because there is at present no Presidency Gazetteer, and because a certain amount of information as to the state of the country seemed necessary for a proper understanding of the official machinery. The information is not brought down later than the 3lst March 1876; it was necessary to fix one date for the whole, and a later date than this could not have been taken with any prospect of securing accuracy. An interleaved edition is published for the use of certain offices; in this such corrections can be made as are necessitated either by: changes in the administration or by the imperfections of the present work.
