The endeavour to establish a uniform orthography for writing foreign languages in European characters has both a scientific and a practical aim. The scientific aim is to bring these lan guages with their literature more completely within our reach, and to increase our knowledge of the nations to which they belong. The practical aim is to facilitate the propagation of the Christian faith and the introduction of Christian civilisation among heathen nations, especially such as have no written language, by furnishing them with a suitable alphabet.
