This book emphasizes the role of effective involvement of stakeholders in the decision-making process for sociotechnical systems from the problem definition stage through implementation. It uses advanced concepts from engineering systems, scientific communication, linguistics and alternative dispute resolution to provide a unified stakeholder-assisted modeling and policy design process for sociotechnical systems such as energy facilities, urban and regional transportation systems, toxic materials siting and other technical systems embedded in a complex social settig. The Cape Wind offshore wind energy project is used as an illustrative case study of the stakeholder process.
