Resistive plasma instabilities have received considerable study in recent years. In particular, instabilities in the resistive incompressible mhd sheet pinch have been investigated by several authors} - 7 Most of this work has been restricted to the limiting cases of large or small resistivityil'q'6 Roberts and Taylor considered purely gravitational resistive instabilities in a system with small constant shear and constant resistivity. Wei5 has obtained sufficient conditions for stability in the special case of constant resistivity and viscosity. In this paper we investigate the exponential stability of static equilibria. Necessary and_sufficient conditions for stability are obtained without any of the above mentioned approximations or limitations.
