If an accurate history were to be prepared for the benefit of those who come after us, it was imperative to do the work without delay. Fortunately, I had preserved all the newspaper cuttings, annual reports and monthly church calendars, and I decided to weave these fragmentary extracts into a continuous history. I can but say with Montaigne, I have here only made a nose gay of culled flowers, and have brought nothing of my own but the thread that ties them together.
