Excerpt from Speech of Mr. J. L. Johnson, of Kentucky, on the Admission of California: Delivered in the House of Representatives of the United States, April 8, 1850
As a distinct proposition I cannot say that I am very much in favor of the admission of California; but if, in connexion with the bill for her admission, a government without the Wilmot proviso for the residue of the newly acquired territory shall be supported by the North, I am willing to vote for her admis sion, notwithstanding my objections, because this will be a settlement of the question.
