Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Speech of Hon. John L. Dawson, of Pennsylvania on the Homestead Bill: Delivered in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, February 14, 1854
It cannot be doubted that the speedy settlement of these lands constitute the true inter ests of the republic. The wealth and strength of a country are its population; and the best part of the population are the cultivators of the soil. Independent farmers are everywhere the basis of society, and true friends of liberty. It seems to me to be our true policy, that the public lands shall cease as soon as practicable to be a source of revenue.
