Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Spanish Composition Compiled and Edited With Notes and Vocabulary
The present book is intended for the use of students who have passed the initial stages in the study of Spanish. After the student. Has had some practice in translating easy English sentences and retranslating into Spanish the material fur nished by his text (in which process the phrases of the original serve as a model), he should be trained in trans lating new material. This exercise develops the power of analysis and the faculty of judgment, and cannot fail to pro duce self-reliance and independence. A good, idiomatic translation is the product of clear and accurate thinking.
The material upon which the student is to exercise his ingenuity cannot be a matter of indifference. All the mate rial presented should serve not only a practical, but also a cultural purpose. While the student gradually learns to ex press himself more or less readily in the foreign idiom, he can at the same time, almost unconsciously and without addi tional effort on his part, be led into the very life and spirit of the foreign language and people. This double purpose the author constantly kept in mind during the preparation of the present volume. Consequently, the selections here presented for translation deal exclusively with Spain, Spanish life, cus toms, and institutions.
