Publisher's Synopsis

"South-East Perth: an archaeological landscape" completes the survey of eastern Perth by the Royal Commission of the Ancient and Historical Monuments. Since the publication of "North-East Perth" in 1990, the Commission's presentation of the results of landscape survey has altered significantly and much greater emphasis is now laid upon understanding the processes that have determined the survival of archaeological monuments.;The area covered represents the south-east portion of Perth and Kinross District and has been the stage for many of the events that have shaped the Scottish Kingdom. From the ruins of Dunkeld cathedral to the Pictish stones at Meigle, or from the ramparts of Dunsinane to the Roman fortress at Inchtuthil, its landscape is richly provided with monuments that can excite the archaeologist, historian or casual visitor. More than this, it holds a hidden past, one that has only been revealed by painstaking fieldwork and aerial photography.
