Publisher's Synopsis
"Songs of Green Hills: An Anthology of Korean Sijos was edited by Kim Ch'ont'aek and published in 1728. Kim collected 580 sijos written not only by famous writers but also by common people and anonymous writers from the late Koryo period to his own era, the mid Choson period. As the first among 170 books of ancient sijo anthologies, this anthology has a very important place in Korean literature. By expertly using three methods of classifying lyrics, that is, according to the tune, to the writers, and to key themes, Kim acquired structural unity. The book shows the charm and wide variety of Korean classical sijos, and is, in this sense, comparable to Palgrave's Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics"--.
