All but the first of these articles appeared originally in the Literary Supplement of The Times, and I am indebted to the proprietors of that journal for permission to reprint them The essay on Queen Victoria, with the ex ception of one or two paragraphs, appears now for the first time. Except for a very few corrections and the addition of one or two notes, the reprinted articles appear as originally published. No attempt has been made to rewrite them in the light of subsequent events.
