Excerpt from Some Observations on Early Currency of Maryland: A Paper Read Before "the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia," Thursday Evening, June 7, 1865
Streeter's paper on the Maryland Currency. Dickeson gives these pieces to Virginia. 1 Edition, 1763, p. 98.permitted on loans, prescribes an interest of six per cent. On money contracts, but allows eight per cent. On those wherein tobacco should enter. In the same year hemp and ?ax were declared to be a legal tender for the payment of one-fourth of any debt: the former being estimated at sixpence, and the latter at fourpence per pound.
