Publisher's Synopsis
A sojourn is a temporary or transitional journey, more than a day off, or a vacation, but not a final destination. There is a final destination, a state of rest. For the ancient Hebrew, that was the land of milk and honey, the Promised Land. For the Christian, that is the spiritual kingdom of God. But first, there is something we are called to do. To sojourn in the wilderness is to respond to the call; to venture out on an exploration, not only of a place, but of meaning and truth. And it is a trial. It is not a walk in the park. In the wilderness, one must have eyes to see and ears to hear, or it may not end well.
To go into the wilderness is to go out of the city; into the creation of God, out of the creation of man; into the natural, out of the artificial. God can be found in the city, but it is hard to hear Him for all the noise, and hard to find Him for all the walls. There is a reason why in the wilderness is a recurring theme in the Bible. There is a reason why we are called to sojourn in the wilderness.
