The action of 76th General Assembly in providing for the improve ment of the Northern Division of the Ohio Canal is the most important move in the affairs of the water ways that has been made in years. It is so recognized by the people throughout the State, and has been a potent factor in bringing about a change of sentiment favorable to the canals. Conditioned on the fulfillment of the provisions of Senate Bill no. 258, the General Government appropriated to build a dam across the Muskingum River between the city of Zanesville and the village of Dresden. The dam, when finished, will have completed the slackwater improvement in the Muskingum from Dresden to the Ohio River, and will have opened a water way for the shipment of unbroken packages from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
