Mental health in the African American community has never been fully studiedhistorically considering the impact of slavery. When we consider the relationship between mental health and slavery, questions begin to arise. How is slavery characterized? Was slavery a disease? Or was it simply a means for economic gain that incidentally resulted in the desecration of a culture due to greed manifested among slave traders and profiteers? There is no doubt that it is important to understand the impact that slavery had on the mental health of those who were affected by this institution.
