Rifaat sallam was born in Menyet Shebin, a small village 40 kilometers east of Cairo, in 1951. he studied Journalism in Cairo University 1969-1973. 1968, the first published poem in Al-Adeib, the literary Lebanese magazine. In 1977, he established- with other Egyptian poets- Ida'ah (Illuminations), a nonperiodical magazine for modernist poetry. In 1979, he established Kitabat (Writings), a literary nonperiodical magazine, which lasted 1984. His poems were published- and still- in the main Arabic and Egyptian periodicals. He participated in Arabic and international symposia and seminars on poetry and cultural affairs in Egypt, Morocco, Iraq, United Emirates, France, Greece, Bulghary, Belguim, Croitia, Tunis and Algiers. Selections of his poetry were translated into French, Greek, Croitian, Italian and Bulgharian languages. Some books, many articles and academic thesises (in Arabic) were made on his particular role in modernist Egyptian and Arabic poetry and the main characteristics of his poetry.
