The writer was an eye-witness of all the battles, and most of the inci dents, described; and he may claim for the work, at least, the merit of strict fidelity to truth. As it is no part of his design to give a partial view of anything that transpired during the eventful period over which the story runs, he has chronicled the facts as they occurred, without detraction or exaggeration, believing this to be the duty of the historian.
