Clay Shannon rides alone into the isolated mining town of Whiskey Creek carrying a deputy sheriff's badge and the weariness born of many years as a lawman on the western frontier. Shannon has been sent by the county sheriff to investigate the murder of the town's former deputy and bring some semblance of order to the rough and lawless Whiskey Creek. Aided by Kathy Winters, a young widow whose husband has been murdered by the local toughs, and backed by Pedro Rodriguez, a courageous resident of Whiskey Creek who once served as a Texas lawman, Shannon struggles to bring the killers to justice and close the Lucky Lady Saloon forever.
But justice is not easy to find in Whiskey Creek, and Shannon's efforts are frustrated at every turn by lack of evidence and the shrewd yet often brutal actions of Parker and Slade. At last Shannon is forced to make a decision: Will he stay within the law-or make his own? The result is an action-packed tale of good and evil.
