Her father was a merchant named Osmanu, who possessed considerable property and was engaged in shipping interests on the Danube. He had the position of a bashi, or upper commis sary, and was held in great esteem, because he had made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, as well as to Mecca, the birth-place of Mohammed. He was on that account called hacljl Osmanu.
