This is an academic study of Protestantism's role in Scottish culture. It examines in turn the different institutions and social movements which are considered to be distinctively Scottish and traces the Protestant element in each. The 19th-century foundations of Scottish Protestantism, its role in the military and politics, and its association with working class culture are described in detail, and there are chapters on the Orange Order and Protestantism and gender.
