Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Henry Dashwood's death brings a cloud of despair into Mrs. Dashwood's life as her husband Henry left all of his properties in the name of his first wife's son, John Dashwood. Even though John wants to help his stepmother and three daughters, he can't as he is warned by his wife Fanny Dashwood.
John and Fanny take responsibility for the house and the life of Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters becomes miserable. At the same time, Fanny's brother Edward visits her sister. There he meets the Dashwood sisters and grows fond of Elinor. Elinor loves Edward too but she cannot express her feelings about her as she is warned by Fanny that she senses their tastes for each other. Ms. Dashwood is offered a house by John Middleton and she decides to move there.
In their new settlement at Barton Cottage, they meet Mrs Jennings and the Middletons neighborhood. Another good acquaintance they meet is Colonel Brandon, a reserved and cultured man. One day, while she was walking in the countryside, Marianne sprains her foot and is helped to get home by a handsome man named Willoughby. Their accidental meeting develops into friendship and love. But one day suddenly Willoughby leaves for London and Marianne goes into a serious state of depression.
After some time, Mrs Jennings takes Elinor and Marianne to London with her. Their Marianne is looking forward to meeting Willoughby. She writes him a letter and she expects to see him soon. One evening, she surprisingly meets Willoughby but becomes sad at his cold response. All dreams of her are shattered when she receives a letter from Willoughby informing her that she is getting engaged to another woman who is very rich.
John Dashwood arrives at Portman Square and invites his sisters to come. Meanwhile, the Steele sisters arrive in London and get acquainted with Elinor and Marianne. Lucy tells Elinor about her about her secret engagement to Edward. Elinor is terribly horrified by the news, but she is able to control her feelings. When Fanny learns of Lucy and Edward's secret engagement, she gets mad at the Steele sisters. Mrs Ferrars disowns Edward, but Colonel Brandon offers him a place in Delaford.
Elinor and Marianne along with Mrs. Jennings travel to Cleveland at the invitation of the Palmers. Marianne falls ill and her condition deteriorates. Colonel Brandon goes to pick up Marianne's mother. Suddenly, Willoughby also comes to Cleveland and knows Marianne's condition. He goes to see her right away and regrets her marriage to Miss Graey only for property reasons. He also confesses his love of him to Marianne. After a few days, Marianne recovers and leaves for Barton with her mother. They all feel good about Brandon for his invaluable help. Marianne is slowly feeling well and now she is relieved to know that she has nothing to do with Willoughby. She now she loves to live.
One day the Dashwoods get information about Lucy and Mr. Ferrars' marriage. Elinor is saddened when she learns this. But when Edward arrives, the whole misunderstanding becomes clear. Lucy will marry Edward's brother Robert because Mrs. Ferrars disowns Edward. She then proposes herself to Elinor and she happily accepts. Mrs Ferrars also apologizes Edward, Elinor and Edward are getting married. They settle in Delaford. Colonel Brandon also gets Marianne's favor and they both get married. Mrs. Dashwood lives in Barton with her youngest daughter.
