Excerpt from Selections From the Imaginary Conversations of Walter Savage Landor: Edited With Notes and an Introduction
These selections do not profess to be fairly representative of Landor's prose. The aim has been to include, not what is most characteristic, but what is most interesting and instructive, there fore most suitable for those who are beginning their studies in literature. For Landor must be approached with circumspection: some of his most characteristic work, delightful indeed as the recreation of mature and meditative years, has no place here. In the Introduction, however, an attempt has been made to restore the balance. But after all, and making the largest allowance for personal taste, no selection can differ very much from Mr. Colvin's. The fact is that of Landor's several thousand pages of prose, that which can make an appeal at once wide and deep can be gathered into the compass of a modest volume. The rest is like the vast plains of the Dakotas fertile, but unpicturesque.
