It is a common error to regard the Scottish language as a corrupted and somewhat barbarous dialect of English. So far from this being so, the Lowland Scots is an ancient tongue, at least as ancient as that spoken on the Thames, and fully as well entitled to call itself English, as being the direct descendant of the old Northern or Angle speech.
