Publisher's Synopsis
During the twelve weeks from July 1st-October 5th 1948 covered by this volume India celebrated the first anniversary of the achievement of independence and the first Gandhi Jayanti after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The Government was faced with an economic crisis due to soaring prices; it integrated the Hyderabad State with the Union by police action. Pakistan belatedly admitted the participation of her troops in the fighting in Kashmir and the UN Commission could find no solution to the problem but brought forward a proposal for a ceasefire. Jawaharlal Nehru constantly impressed on the people that only by following the Mahatma's example and principles could India endure. He gave special attention to the problems of Indians overseas, particularly in Sri Lanka and the countries of South East Asia.
