Several significant developments in recent years justify a comprehensive text devoted solely to seed for commercial forestry species. Most seed production in Britain, although increasing, comes from Forestry Commission plantations.;One object of the manual is to provide all the information necessary for organizing and undertaking seed collections, and thus to stimulate greater seed collection efforts in the future throughout British forests. Each chapter is written by individual specialists in their field. The manual is a companion to "Seed Manual for Ornamental Trees and Shrubs", Forestry Commission Bulletin 59.
